Did you know that "wishing on an eyelash" dates back to the 19th century? Superstitions certainly travel a long way. As kids, we might have invested a great deal of time waiting for an eyelash to fall naturally, eagerly making a wish when it did. These moments, however childish they seem now, were a delightful part of our lives. Superstitions like this played an important role in our childhoods. We simply wished for things to turn out as we hoped, then continued with whatever we were doing.
This tradition has many interesting variations. Some say you should blow the eyelash from your hand, while others believe you should throw it behind you after making your wish. Some superstitions even have connections to witchcraft, but let's not go there😅. It is believed that blowing off a fallen eyelash also wards off evil. Strange as it may sound, for a child or an early teenager, this might still seem like a curious and fun experiment, no matter how ridiculous it might appear to adults.
I hope there are some childish adults who still practice this. Hope is a good thing, and so is a bit of childishness. We should keep our hearts young, but of course, we cannot trade sensibility for anything else!
